
Students Pursuing Criminology & Criminal Justice Undertake Experimental Learning of Penology, Juvenile Delinquency and Offender Rehabilitation
on 14th November 2023, a team of students from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology pursuing Criminology & Criminal Justice visited Shikusa Borstal Institution for experiential learning of Penology, Offender Rehabilitation, and Juvenile Delinquency. These are some of the units that are taught theoretically in class and require field experience to acquire hands-on skills and a better understanding.
In the field of Criminology and Criminal Justice, the significance of field experience is highly recognized. It enables learners to understand the meaning and scope of penology and its relation with criminology. The students were acquainted with skills in various alternative modes of punishment and execution of punishment to offenders.
The students were taken through the roles of the sections of the institution and the rehabilitation programs offered to the juvenile delinquents at Borstal Institution which include Counseling, Education, Spiritual welfare, Vocational training, and Life Skills training courses such as Masonry, Tailoring, and Carpentry. Additionally, they learned about various offenses and penal
Correctional institutions especially the Prisons are going through reforms intended to make them less punitive and more rehabilitative. This demands high levels of specialized professional training in Penology, Correction, and Administration. Such learning sessions are therefore designed to meet the professional and manpower needs of the reformed correctional system.
